Lake District UNESCO bid

In 2017 the Lake District National Park will apply to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the timeline for our activities in the lead-up to the bid.

Jan 2014
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport recommends the Lake District as the UK's nomination for 2016 World Heritage inscription.
Nov 2014
Consultation opens for the Partnership's Plan - the management plan for the proposed World Heritage Site, delivered by the Lake District Park Partnership.
Jan 2015
Partnership's Plan consultation closes.
May 2015
A nomination dossier is developed for the bid. This is taken to 11 May Partnership meeting and 20 May Authority meeting and submitted to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and English Heritage for checking.
Sep 2015
Department of Culture, Media and Sport submits draft nomination dossier to UNESCO for completeness checking.
Nov 2015
Feedback received on draft nomination dossier from UNESCO.
Feb 2016
Final nomination dossier submitted by Department of Culture, Media and Sport to UNESCO.
Mar 2016
Informed of UNESCO’s receipt of nomination dossier and confirmation that application is complete and will be reviewed.
Jul 2017
Decision made by UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
